ChatGPT now offers direct purchase thanks to OpenAI
OpenAI recently introduced Instant Checkout, a new tool that allows customers to complete transactions within ChatGPT without ever leaving the discussion interface.
The specifics:
The solution was developed in collaboration with Stripe and initially supports Etsy sellers, with over 1 million Shopify businesses shortly to be able to access it.
After ChatGPT makes product recommendations, users can click the "Buy" button, check their order details, and make a payment in chat.
Because the underlying Agentic Commerce Protocol was made publicly available, any store can integrate it, and Stripe merchants only need to make minor code changes.
Although the business charges merchants for completed purchases, the product rankings are still based on relevancy and remain natural.
Instant Checkout and the ACP seem like a turning moment for the transition to the age of agentic AI commerce, and we'll be interested to see if OAI eventually integrates advertisements into the flow.
As more people shop on ChatGPT, the structure presents an intriguing new source of income for the AI behemoth.
