'Code Red' from OpenAI following Google's advancements
According to The Information, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman informed staff that the business is going into a "code red" push to enhance ChatGPT following Google's latest updates, changing priorities and expediting a model known as "Garlic."

The specifics:

Altman stated in an internal memo that now is "a critical time for ChatGPT," advocating for enhancements to capabilities like picture creation and personalization.

Additionally, he disclosed that Shallotpeat, a new reasoning model that will be released next week, is said to outperform Gemini 3 on benchmarks.

Targeting 2026, Garlic, a larger model upgrade, may be a GPT-5.2 or 5.5-type release that resolves earlier pre-training problems, according to The Information.

As part of the Code Red campaign, OAI is apparently delaying advertising and AI agent projects in favor of concentrating on the ChatGPT user experience.

Three years after Google announced its own emergency effort in reaction to ChatGPT in 2022, the roles had been flipped. Even while OAI still has a sizable market share, its competitors are growing, and its model lead is more under jeopardy than ever thanks to Gemini 3, Anthropic's Opus 4.5, and the Chinese open-source movement.
