Meta reduces 600 positions at its AI division
According to a message from Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, Meta recently terminated about 600 workers throughout its AI division.
The company's FAIR research arm was apparently affected, but its superintelligence group TBD Lab remained intact.
The specifics:
Wang informed staff members that the cuts will result in smaller teams needing fewer clearances and urged those who were let go to look for other Meta jobs.
Cuts spared TBD Lab, which Wang directly manages, but targeted Meta's FAIR research section, product teams, and infrastructure organizations.
Ananya Kumar, an OAI scientist, and Andrew Tulloch, a co-founder of TML, were recently hired by the business as part of its aggressive recruitment strategy from competitors.
The actions come after disagreement over new publication review standards earlier this month among FAIR researchers, including AI pioneer Yann LeCun.
Although Meta's significant reorganization and superintelligence theft were the buzz of the summer, there has been conflict between the new hires and the established staff.
Traditional FAIR researchers may be caught in the crossfire as Wang and company try to move quickly and create a completely different route for the tech giant's AI plans.
