Microsoft's updated conditions and OpenAI's corporate transformation
In order to resolve conflicts about AGI rights and ownership stakes, OpenAI recently concluded its contentious transformation to a public benefit corporation and renegotiated its agreement with Microsoft.
The specifics:
The original foundation, now known as the OpenAI Foundation, has $130 billion in equity and plans to allocate $25 billion to "AI resilience infrastructure" and health research.
Microsoft's shareholding in the new company decreases from 32.5% to about 27%, but with recent fundraising, its stake is now valued at about $135 billion.
Microsoft currently retains tech rights through 2032 even after AGI arrives, and any future claims will be verified by an impartial expert body.
OAI is committed to $250 billion in Azure purchases, but it is free to look for compute elsewhere. Microsoft and OAI can now pursue AGI with other partners.
Although OAI's restructuring process has been difficult, it seems that the legal review process is now complete, resulting in what the corporation refers to be "one best-resourced philanthropic organizations ever."
The chilly relationship between the AI leader and its largest partner should also improve as a result of the new Microsoft terms.
