The Chief AI Scientist at Meta intends to leave
Yann LeCun, a longtime Meta Chief AI Scientist and Turing Award recipient, is apparently preparing to leave the firm. He has already started funding discussions and aims to start his own startup focused on creating world models.
The specifics:
LeCun, who has been in charge of Meta's FAIR division since 2013, has reportedly informed colleagues that he intends to depart the company in the upcoming months, according to FT.
According to reports, LeCun's next project would concentrate on world models that learn from spatial and audiovisual data instead of text-based systems.
As part of Meta's extensive AI reorganization, LeCun started reporting to Alexandr Wang. This summer, there was conflict between FAIR and the new course.
About 600 jobs were recently eliminated from Meta's AI divisions, including FAIR, but not the newly established TBD Lab under Wang's supervision.
This impending resignation is hardly surprising. Throughout the reorganization, there has been conflict between Meta's longtime employees and recent hires, and LeCun's criticisms of AI are consistently at odds with Meta's new AI strategy. It has to be seen if the forthcoming endeavor shows him correct or if the well-known ability confirms its value.
